Native to Asian grassy plains and semi aired lands, the gray zebu subsists on an herbivore diet of grasses, small shrubs and tree leaves. Zebu is a common name for several breeds of domesticated humped cattle and is believed to be a descendant of the wild Ox of Java or Bonero. The zebu has a large muscular hump on its back above the shoulders, short horns and a flap of hanging skin under the neck. It is highly resistant to heat and disease. It was introduced into the United States and South America to be used for crossbreeding with native cattle to develop new strains of cattle. The zebu is used extensively in Africa and Asia as a beast of burden, while in the United States they are raised primarily as a meat source.
