Native to England and Wales grassland areas, this breed of cattle dates back to the 1700's when small red cattle were bred with a large Welsh breed once numerous in England. Raised for its high quality beef, the Hereford soon became the dominant beef cattle throughout the world. They can be found from the Arctic north to the southern prairies of South Africa. First imported to the United States from England in 1817, the Hereford soon became dominant over traditional Longhorn and Shorthorn breeds found in this country. They are a strong breed that can easily survive a variety of weather conditions.
