They were imported into the United States from Canada and were originally intended for zoos. Private buyers then took interest and soon they were found worldwide. Color and markings vary, ranging from white, black or mixture of both and some have spots. They subsist on an omnivore diet of plants and some animal substances. Full grown potbellied pigs average 70 to 150 lbs and are 3 ft long and 14 to 18" tall, compared to domestic swine averaging 600 to 1500 lbs. and 26 to 42" tall. Most potbellied pigs are purchased as pets. Although cute, these little guys do not stay small and cuddly, growing to an average of 120 lbs. As they mature, they are not fond of being held.
