Native to France the poitou donkey is the largest of all donkeys and the worlds finest working mule. The Romans introduced them into the Poitou region of France, valuing their large ears, head, legs and long shaggy coats. The Poitou region played a significant role in supplying strong quality mules to be bred with the Mulassier horse. The result was today's friendly, affectionate and docile poitou donkey. A rare breed, the poitou was nearly extinct by 1977, however, careful breeding programs in the United States and France have made it possible where currently a few are sold to private owners each year.
