Native to African Sub-desert, plains and arid grassland areas, zebras are the most common of Africa's mammals.   They are found predominantly in large herds numbering in the hundreds, and they often mix with antelope herds.  The herds mix for protection against larger predators, and because there is no food shortage, there is no competition for food reserves.

The Grants Zebra is a sub-species of the Plains zebra.  The presence of leg striping down to the hooves and broad black stripes on a white background sets them apart from other zebras. No two zebras have the same stripe pattern.  Although more active during the day, they feed for one or two hours in the evening to get enough food.  They may travel up to 10 miles per day before retiring for the evening while one or two herd members keep watch for approaching predators.
